Charity isn’t just a project for us. It’s part of our everyday life.

There are performances that end with the final round of applause. And there is work that continues long after the stage lights go out. Since its inception, the Riga Independent Theater has believed that theater is not just art. It is a tool capable of changing people’s lives. Sometimes all it takes is one conversation, one workshop, or one opportunity for a person to believe in themselves again. That is precisely why our work has never been limited to simply creating performances. We work with children, young people, and adults who find themselves in difficult life situations. With people who have lost faith in themselves. With those who need not only help but also the feeling that they are still an important part of society. Over many years, we have gained significant experience in social work, using acting techniques, improvisation, and methods from communication and psychology. Our actors and educators work in correctional facilities, helping people develop communication skills, recognize their emotions, overcome prolonged apathy and depression, and prepare for their return to society. We have worked with children affected by the war in Ukraine, using creative therapy and theater methods to help them regain a sense of security, the ability to trust, and the joy of childhood. We help immigrants and people who are starting a new life in Latvia to learn the Latvian language and integrate more successfully into society. The theater environment allows them to learn the language naturally—through dialogue, movement, emotions, and live communication. Over the years, we have worked with hundreds of children, organizing creative workshops, educational projects, and activities that help young children overcome their fears more easily. Every year, we also carry out Christmas charity projects for children in Latvia and beyond, because we believe that the holiday spirit should reach every child, regardless of their family’s financial situation or living conditions.

This work isn’t visible on stage. It’s rarely shown on television. It rarely makes the headlines. Yet it is precisely this work that changes people’s lives every day.

In 2020, the Riga Independent Theater was granted the status of a public benefit organization in the fields of cultural promotion and social welfare. This was confirmation that our work for the public good has become an integral part of the theater’s mission. But in reality, this mission began much earlier. It began the moment we decided that the theater should be accessible not only to those who can afford a ticket, but also to those who currently need human support the most. Charity is not possible without people who believe in it. Every donation allows us to organize more activities for children, reach more families, continue our work with people in correctional facilities, help children affected by war, develop integration programs, and create new projects for those who often cannot ask for help themselves.
